About Donaldson Scholars

The Charles W. Donaldson Scholars Academy is a collaborative effort between the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Philander Smith College in cooperation with the Pulaski County Special School District.

Donaldson Scholars aims to improve the educational achievement for students in grades 9-12, with special attention to African American students and others who are at risk of academic failures, due to socioeconomic disadvantage or other factors. Our goals are to prepare students for success beyond high school, eliminate the need for remediation while increasing high school and college graduation rates.

More overarching goals are to enable students to apply and utilize creative and critical thinking skills (revised Bloom’s taxonomy); to prepare students for success beyond high school graduation; and to positively impact each student’s life choices and civility.

The Donaldson program consists of:

  1. Donaldson Scholars Academy – A year-round program open to students in the Pulaski County Special School District that aims to improve the educational achievement for all students, with a special attention to African American students and others who are at-risk of academic failures due to socioeconomic disadvantage, or other factors.
  2. Summer Bridge Academy – A three-week residential program aimed at preparing incoming freshmen for college-level work eliminating the need for them to take remedial math and English courses. The program is open to all high school seniors who have been admitted to UA Little Rock, and based on test scores are required to take remediation courses.
